Hello world!

We are a group of ladies who love to quilt. Every month we meet in the local Art Gallery to quilt, chat, have a cookie or two and just have a good time, while working on our projects. We are based in Florenceville, New Brunswick, (Canada) located in the Upper St John River valley, hence our name.

July 10th 2007 meeting

July 10th, 2007 by Marja Kuijsten | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

uly was a quiet summer meeting. Marja and Jackie cut squares for the Festival raffle quilt (thanks to Hazel for all the fabric!) Sandra is back from England and has taken this project in hand — please get in touch with her if you can help sew squares or sew squares in rows.

Marja is designing the group scarecrow again. This year it will be a baby in a pram. If anyone has baby clothes (especially a bonnet), blankets and other bedding, please let Marja know (keeping in mind that tattered, stained, ragged, etc. is best!)

Welcome to a new member, Haley Greene. She brought a great work in progress to the meeting, a hand sewn crazy quilt made from her son’s baby clothes….

The Bridgewater stitching group is excited about coming to the August meeting, and a couple of Woodstock Quilt Guild members contacted Sandra to ask if they could visit, so for a summer meeting, August should be well attended!

June 12th 2007 meeting

June 12th, 2007 by Marja Kuijsten | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Hi Everyone,

The June meeting was small (5 people) but fun.

Marja and Jackie chose fabric for a rag crib quilt for the group’s Fall Festival scarecrow (it will be a baby in a cradle) and Marja stitched it up at the meeting. The quilt was quite impressive.

Hazel told us about the Country Farm Fabrics quilt shop in Caribou, and Jackie suggested that the group might take a field trip over to visit the shop. I spoke to Sheila, the owner, and she asked that we let her know when we set a date — if we came during the last two weeks in July, she would arrange for someone to be there since she’ll be out of town during that time.

Is there interest in making this trip a “shop hop” and going to the Presque Isle Marden’s, the Caribou shop, and the Madawaska Marden’s (about 50 minutes from Caribou)??

We talked a lot at Tuesday’s meeting about the group’s contribution to the upcoming Fall Festival. It was decided not to do a quilt show this year, but to wait a few years between shows (so that people wouldn’t be showing, and seeing, the same quilts year after year.).

There will be a Market like last year and the Group can again have a table. Does anyone want to oversee this?

Members who have sale-able items — quilted (or other crafted) items, quilt or craft books, maybe high-end garage sale items, other??? please let the group know by email or at the July meeting.

Hopefully, Marja will bring her quilted postcards again; those were big sellers last year ….

There was talk of raffling off a quilt at the Festival Market/the Festival at large/the community in order to earn money for the group.

Does anyone have a nice quilt that they would like to donate for this purpose (or does anyone want to whip one up)???

Mandy introduced the idea of a “quilt house” at the Festival. This is still in the planning stages. If anyone has older quilts that can be used in the house’s construction, please email, or let Mandy know.

There’s an informal meeting planned for Wednesday, July 20th at 10:00 AM at the Gallery to plan the Group’s contribution to the Festival.. Please email if you’d like to come and this is an inconvenient time.

If I’ve left anything out, please email the group!

Please note: the July meeting will be JULY10th (the SECOND Tuesday rather than the third) to accommodate activities at the Gallery.

Please bring snacks — see you then!

May 15th 2007 meeting

May 15th, 2007 by Marja Kuijsten | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Hi All,

We had a very productive May meeting!

This meeting served as the one-year anniversary of the Upriver Girls. The group presented Mandy with a braided runner (colors chosen by Mandy, construction by group members, especially Sandra and Gayle) with our thanks for her support and hospitality.

Thanks to everyone at the meeting who helped finish up the hospital dolls. Sandra and Eddie will be delivering them to Chalmers Hospital — anyone wishing to be part of that trip should contact them.

Eddie set up her oval quilt frame with a lap quilt to provide an opportunity for novice quilters to practice quilting on a frame. She quilted alongside a beginner (me) and offered great on-the-spot advice. Hopefully this will be an ongoing activity –

The next meeting is Tuesday, June 19th at 7:00 PM at the Gallery. Please get the word out to those who don’t have email….

At the June meeting, Marja asks if volunteers can help her copy the signatures from the 1914 Florenceville signature quilt. This will make it easier for her to research the names, and a list can be circulated in the community to learn more about the people whose names appear on the quilt.

If anyone has ideas about special activities for the summer meetings, please share them at the next meeting. Bring snacks! (Snacks at the May meeting were outstanding!)

If I’ve forgotten anything, please email the group — See you in June!

April 17 2007 Meeting

April 17th, 2007 by Marja Kuijsten | Comments Off | Filed in Uncategorized

Hi Everyone,
Another great quilt meeting
Marja, Cathy, Gayle, and Eddie brought gorgeous quilts to show off, and Marilyn brought lovely bags (made for her lucky nieces).bags

The group chose the fabrics to use for Sandra’s teaching   project, and most (?) of the runner was completed at the   meeting. (Those wanting to continue working on it before the  next meeting should contact Sandra….)
Marja brought the Florenceville "heritage" quilt, and Marilyn  suggested that we contact Mrs. Martinson in Glassville to see if  she knew the quilt’s history. (Mrs Martinson was not aware of  the Florenceville quilt, but knew of two other “signature”  quilts: one at the Glassville United Church and one that she   herself has, which her father won in a raffle. She has the key  to the church and can arrange for us to see both of these  historic quilts.

Eddie single-handedly, and Sandra with much help from   doll-makers at the Florenceville Elemantary School, have made   about 80 dolls for pediatric patients at the Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton.  When we have supplied the hospital with 100 dolls, their doll needs will be met for this year. ( If the  group would like to take on another project, please bring ideas –)

Thanks to Gail for delicious ginger cookies!

Our   next meeting is May 21, the group’s one-year anniversary.   Please email if you’d be willing to bring snacks, or any other festive contribution!
